What is CBD oil?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of numerous chemical compounds known as cannabinoids that occur naturally in the cannabis sativa plant. CBD is extracted from specially bred varieties of cannabis called hemp that contain very low levels of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. That means CBD does not produce intoxicating effects like the ‘high’ associated with smoking cannabis.

CBD oil is used as a natural wellness product. It’s made by adding CBD to a carrier oil such as hemp seed or olive oil. Jersey Hemp’s bottled CBD oils come with a built-in dropper making it easy to take the right amount for you.

What are the benefits of CBD oil?

As food supplements rather than medicines, CBD oil products don’t make medical claims. However, many people who use CBD believe it improves their general sense of wellbeing and there is a growing body of scientific research suggesting it has the potential to help with a wide range of health conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, sleeping problems and even some cancer symptoms. Specially refined CBD is already in use in approved medicines that treat rare forms of epilepsy and some symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

What’s the difference between CBD oil and full-spectrum CBD oil?

CBD oil is made from CBD isolate, the near-pure form of CBD, which contains only trace elements of other substances from the hemp plant. Full-spectrum oils, however, are made from CBD extract that also contains other naturally occurring hemp compounds, including cannabinoids, aromatics called terpenes and antioxidants known as flavonoids.

Many of these components have proven health benefits of their own, but they may also contribute to a theory known as the entourage effect which says that taken together they boost the overall benefits of the CBD.

Jersey Hemp CBD Oil is made from organic CBD isolate. Our Full-Spectrum CBD Oil contains extra cannabinoids including CBG and a diverse range of flavonoids, terpenes and other natural antioxidants. Our Premium Full-Spectrum CBD Oil is made entirely from hemp farmed in Jersey and uses a proprietary extraction process to provide the complete chemical profile of the hemp flower, including all cannabinoids and the most delicate terpenes.

Understanding CBD oil strengths

There are several numbers you’ll often see displayed on the label of a bottle of CBD oil. These may include the volume of oil in ml and the total amount of CBD in mg but if you want to know the strength of the oil – and therefore the amount of CBD in a single droplet – the percentage is the number to look for. To get a rough idea of how much CBD is in a drop of oil, just halve the percentage.

Jersey Hemp CBD oils come in 5% and 10% solutions, delivering approximately 2.5mg and 5mg of CBD per droplet, respectively, so you can measure the right dose for you.

How to take CBD oil

Good CBD oils come with a built-in dropper so it’s easy to measure the amount you want. You can swallow the oil directly or add it drinks or to food just before you eat it. However, the CBD will act more quickly and more of it will be available if you take it sublingually, which simply means ‘under the tongue’.

Place the required number of droplets beneath your tongue and hold them there for a minute or two before swallowing. This allows the CBD to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream via the mucous membrane for maximum effect.

What’s the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil?

The terms hemp oil and CBD oil are occasionally confused with one another, partly because hemp oil is sometimes added to CBD to make CBD oil.

CBD oil is the finished product containing CBD (cannabidiol) along with the carrier oil it’s blended with. Hemp oil – or more accurately hemp seed oil – is made from the seeds of the hemp plant and can be used as a culinary oil or in cosmetics. Hemp seed oil has many health benefits of its own but it doesn’t naturally contain CBD. This has to be added.

All Jersey Hemp CBD oils are made with organic CBD and our own cold-pressed hemp seed oil, rich in omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Is CBD oil safe?

CBD oil is generally considered safe. The World Health Organization says it has “a good safety profile” and the European Union that it “does not appear to have any psychotropic effect or any harmful effect on human health”.

However, CBD may interact with certain drugs in potentially unsafe ways, so if you are taking any medication or supplements you should not use CBD without talking to your doctor first.

Is CBD oil legal in the UK?

Yes, CBD oil and CBD itself are perfectly legal in the United Kingdom. The psychoactive cannabinoid THC is a controlled substance but hemp grown in the UK and British Isles contains only very small amounts of THC which is reduced to legal levels during the extraction and refining processes.

Jersey Hemp was the first company in the British Isles to be granted a licence for the harvesting of hemp for CBD production.

Can CBD oil get you high?

No, CBD will not get you high. The intoxicating ‘high’ associated with recreational cannabis use is produced by the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. CBD is produced from hemp plants containing very low levels of THC which are further reduced during the refinement process, leaving only trace amounts.

This article explains how to ensure you avoid CBD containing illegal levels of THC.
