At Jersey Hemp, we love having our four-legged team members around and want to look after their wellbeing as well as our own. And that’s why we’ve put together this guide to CBD oil for pets. We hope it answers your questions if you’re thinking about whether you should use CBD oil for your dog. If you want to let the animals in your life enjoy the same high quality CBD goodness that you do, safely and effectively, then read on.
Dogs and CBD, what should you know?
The first thing you should know about CBD is that it’s not psychotropic or toxic. CBD is a non-intoxicating compound – unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol or the ‘euphoric compound of marijuana), and it won’t get your pet high. CBD is safe to use for both humans and pets – read our information on pets and CBD oil here. Why does CBD work on pets as well as humans? It’s because all mammals have the same endocannabinoid system, which plant cannabinoids like CBD fit into perfectly. It helps to regulate our overall wellbeing and can do the same for four-legged family members too.
Is CBD safe?
CBD is safe for pets. But with so many brands of CBD available to buy online, it’s important to choose your CBD brand wisely. Unfortunately, there are many sub-standard brands out there whose products don’t live up the claims made on the label. Always do your research and make sure you’re buying from a trusted brand who cultivates and extracts their CBD using the best possible standards.
What’s the best CBD oil for my dog?
At Jersey Hemp, our CBD is derived from organic hemp, which makes it a great option for pet owners who want to avoid chemical fertilisers, pesticides or other chemical nasties. Our CBD products have been made with safe ingredients, using the very best extraction techniques to make sure they’re the best they possibly can be for everyone who buys from us.
When buying CBD online for your dog, always look for companies like ours that have all their products tested by an independent laboratory and will provide certificates of analysis for every batch they sell. And remember, CBD oil is different from other cannabis products, it’s not marijuana and doesn’t contain THC. THC can harm canines of all sizes, so only choose oils that contain ‘no detectable THC’.
CBD oil and dogs – a recent survey
Pet owners report that CBD works well for their dogs. However, the current lack of official studies on CBD use with animals, means that we can’t yet publish study results. However, AmericanMarijuana.org conducted an in-depth survey on over 1,000 pet owners in the US who started to use CBD on their pets.
From the study, 63% of the respondents said they’d used other medications before trialling CBD on their pets. Of that 63%, over 80% agreed that CBD was more effective and safer. And interestingly, after trying CBD on their pets, 9 out of 10 participants in this study would recommend CBD for pets to others.
How do I use it?
There are many ways to introduce CBD into your pet’s diet from CBD treats for dogs to topical cream or CBD capsules. But with any new supplement, you always want to make sure it works, and can be absorbed easily.
CBD oils have been shown to be the most effective way of absorbing CBD. A 2019 article in CNet Health & Wellness on dogs and CBD found that CBD oils have the best pharmacokinetic profile – meaning that it reached the highest concentration in the blood, stayed in the bloodstream the longest and performed the most consistently across the different dog breeds.
That’s why we advise using our CBD oil, which is made from our CBD extract and our hemp seed oil. Just use the dropper to place the oil under your dog’s tongue, where it will be absorbed into his bloodstream.
The main benefits of using a CBD oil over other methods is it allows you to know exactly how much CBD your dog has had. If you have several dogs, you can customise the amounts per animal. Tinctures like CBD oil also work faster than other types of CBD products for dogs, because they’re absorbed directly. And if your dog doesn’t like the taste of CBD oil, you could always consider mixing it into his food.
How do I know how much CBD oil to give my dog?
Use our CBD calculator to work out how much CBD you should be giving your dog. Our advice is always to start with a low dose and then monitor your pet’s reaction. Some people find it helpful to keep a journal of their dog’s behaviour while trying out CBD oil for the first few days or weeks. Monitoring your dog’s reactions like this can help you decide if it’s having a positive effect.
Using CBD oils can also make it easier to scale amounts up or down, which is especially useful if you have several dogs of different sizes! If you’re ready to try CBD oil for your dog, just follow this link to shop our CBD online, with free delivery straight to your door.
